Why Choose Heating Insurance? |
If you have ever had to pay for an emergency call out for repairs to your boiler or heating system, you will know how expensive this can be, especially when paying by the hour. Many people like the reassurance of having heating insurance, but do usually take this from their energy supplier, without shopping around for cheaper prices, or considering whether they actually need the cover in the first place.
Before deciding whether you need heating insurance, you need to know whether the heating system in your home is actually your responsibility. Unless you own your home, you don’t need to buy heating insurance. If you rent your home from a private landlord or live in social housing, then it is your landlord’s responsibility to maintain your heating system, and to arrange yearly boiler inspections. However, if you have just bought your home or had a new boiler and heating system put in place, do read the manual to find out whether it is still under warranty or not, before buying additional cover.

What Is Included In Heating Insurance?
|
There are many different levels of cover when it comes to heating insurance, so it is extremely important to check out which policies are the best for you.
Standard heating generally comes into 2 categories;
Boiler Only - This usually covers the boiler itself and the controls.
Full Heating System – This includes the heating, radiators, pipes and hot water as well as the boiler and controls.
Some plans will also cover the costs for your yearly boiler inspection, which you will need anyway. The very best heating insurance policies will cover costs for plumbing, drains and electrical wiring, but these can be very expensive. Another thing to be wary of when choosing you heating insurance is that some insurance policies limit the number of callouts they will attend per year, or even limit the amount of work carried out per year due to costs.
As well as the extent of your cover, there are a few other things to check before you take out a heating insurance policy such as;
• The Helpline. Will you have access to an emergency 24 hour helpline? And how long will you have to wait before the technician will actually assess your problem?
• What is considered an emergency? Some insurers do not see a lack of hot water as an emergency, whereas others will only consider this in winter.
• Is your boiler eligible for cover? Boilers over 15 years old are excluded from many insurance plans, and some boilers over 7 years old may require an inspection beforehand.
• The no claims period. Many insurance policies have a no claims period, usually of 30 days at the beginning of the policy, during this time you cannot make a claim.
• Do you already have boiler cover? If you are already paying for boiler cover, do check that you are able to cancel your policy free of charge and switch to another if you find that you can make savings.
